White Gold vs. Platinum

We are often asked by customers about the advantages of various metals as they consider what they should choose for their own wedding bands and jewelry. To help you with this decision, we have provided below some details about the differences between white gold and platinum.

  • Price: Platinum is a much rarer metal than gold (over 30 times as rare!), and as a result is more expensive. Platinum is also a purer metal (90-95% pure) than 14-karat gold (less than 60% pure) or 18-karat gold (75% pure), and it weighs more than any other precious metal. You can usually expect to pay approximately double the cost of a white gold ring setting to have it produced in platinum.
  • Color: Platinum is naturally white in color, and will remain white permanently, with no risk of ever tarnishing or wearing out. White gold, on the other hand, is simply yellow gold with additional alloys to make it appear white, and will require regular rhodium-plating to maintain its white color. Rhodium is used to cover the surface of the jewelry item, but may wear off over time, causing the ring to "yellow" with age.
  • Maintenance: Since platinum is softer, it is slightly more subject to scratches, but those scratches can easily be polished out. However, platinum is also more durable, and does not lose any traces of metal when it is scratched or polished. Without polishing, platinum develops a very distinctive natural patina that some people find preferable to glossy polished finish. White gold will not scratch as easily, but will lose small amounts of metal over years of use and polishing. A white gold setting should be replaced after 25 years of use, even with regular polishing and rhodium-plating, to ensure that there is no risk of the diamonds becoming dislodged due to wear.
  • Skin Sensitivity: Platinum is hypo-allergenic. White gold can cause allergic reactions in those with sensitivities to it. If you have a metal allergy, we recommend selecting platinum.

We would be happy to discuss the differences between white gold and platinum for your specific engagement ring setting or wedding band. You are welcome to contact us online or by phone at (877) 446-4030.
